The Rotorua Boys Pay Us A Visit

Thanks to 1st XV Coach Steve Simpson for the following report on last weekends rugby exchange. Those of you in Auckland might like to note we will be in Mangere next week to play De La Salle. More details later in the week.

Francis Douglas Memorial College played Rotorua Boys High School on Saturday 2 April. The 2nd XV played on Yarrows No 4, due to cricket finals being played at the College. The seconds competed well against much bigger opposition, with Daniel Churstain and captain Shaun Burrows standing out in the forwards and Nathan Clough competing well at half back. At half time the score was 9 - 15, with Michael Blanks slotting three penalties. Rotorua managed one converted try in the second half, making the final score 9 - 22.

In the first fifteen game FDMC started well, stringing together many phases, but failing to finish several good scoring opportunities. Eventually though the pressure told with a successful penalty from Scott Barrett. Rotorua then came close to scoring, but the FDMC defense held and from a resulting turnover Dylan Juffermans ran from under his posts to score the opening try, converted by Caleb Ritai. Half time score 10 - 0 to FDMC.

Rotorua started the second half with more urgency and gained early field position through good kicking from their first five. They managed to cross for two tries, one converted and kick two penalties to take a 10 - 18 lead. FDMC responded and managed to work their way down field. After good forward play, prop Andrew Trolove crashed over, with Barrett converting to bring the score to 17 - 18 with seven minutes still to go. This ended up being the final score.

In the forwards, hooker Ricky Ricitelli, the young Blake Barrett at No 6 and Trolove all had strong games. In the backs captain Tei Walden was a dominant figure, until he left the field with concussion, and second five Paddy Forsythe had a top game defensively.

Next college game - Wednesday 13 April, De La Salle College (Away)
