The Boarder's Cup

Thanks to Steve Simpson for the following report on the annual Boarder's challenge with NPBHS. A great effort and a very good result.

On Wednesday 15th September Francis Douglas Memorial College Year 9 Boarders played their annual rugby game against New Plymouth Boys High School Year 9 Boarders. Both teams are coached by their respective Year 13 Boarders and have been put through early morning fitness sessions and after school skills coaching for many months. NPBHS had won the last four encounters between the hostels. Also, when they were Year 9’s, the current FDMC year 13’s had suffered the biggest loss in the 11 year history of the game so they were keen to get a win.

NPBHS began well and were rewarded with an early try to their number 8, this was quickly followed by a penalty and then another try to lead 13 – 0 after just twenty minutes. Just before half time FDMC responded with a try, when they drove from a lineout and flanker Mitch Budge touched down. Jordie Barrett converting from near the touchline and into the wind. NPBHS leading 13 – 7 at half time. The second half started much like the first with the big Boys High forwards making good metres and eventually crashing over for another try which was unconverted, 18 - 7.

FDMC did not give in though and using the educated boot of young Barrett gained good field position and hit back with two tries of their own. The first went to centre Paddy Ford and the second to prop and captain Isaac Poole. This brought the score to 18 – 17 to NPBHS.

A bit of indiscipline saw a player from each side in the sin bin and a few minutes later another Boys High player joined them. FDMC took full advantage of this with Barrett kicking a penalty and Ford crossing for two more tries for his hat trick, one converted by Barrett. Making the final score 32 – 18 to FDMC. Mason Barnes one of the Year 13 Head Coaches said he was proud of the boys and that they showed great College spirit and fitness to come back and win.
