More Pre Season

Old Boy Nathan Cleaver seen here on the burst in a pre season game in Sydney.

League devotees will notice the blue and gold of Parramatta. Nathan is playing in their grade teams and working his way towards a shot at the big time. While Nathan was a back at school he is shaping up as a real league front rower.

Pre Season Training

Its the time of year when young men start running up hills in anticipation of the winter season to come. This is an excellent photo we have flogged straight from the FDMC Soccer blog. Note that the hill paddock has recently yielded yet another crop of hay.

Older Boys

This 2002 shot of a group of senior students reminds us that they don't stay little, as seen in yesterday's post, for very long.

New Boys

This time of year sees all the new boys getting oriented to their new school. We found this photo in the archives of such a group of boys, back in the 1980s? We don't recognise any one in the group so would be happy for more info. What looks a bit strange now is the short shorts, short sleeved shirts and grey jerseys

Before and After

As predicted the senior hostel was completed in time for this year's Y13 boarders to snuggle in. Great effort from Dan Keegan and his team along with the support of the Vavasour Family Trust.

Scholarships and Tag Clouds

The Scholarship exam results were out this week and we were pleased to see that FDMC gained 6 Scholarship passes from three students.
  • Simon Velvin - Physics, Statistics, Calculus
  • Amrit Singh - Biology, Chemistry
  • Joshua Hickford - Physical Education
Well done to those guys - we believe Josh's pass was the first Scholarship we have had in PE.

You will notice a large blue group of words which has been added to the side bar. This is a tag cloud which identifies the tags or labels used on the posts we put up. Clicking on a word should take you to the posts which used that particular word tag.

Welcome Back Bro

Look who is back among us.

After a stay with family in the wilds of Kaikoura in 2007 Br Will is back living with the Brothers community. He is making himself useful around the property and will be acting as a visiting liaison person, along with Br Declan, as we approach next year's Jubilee.

Astute passers by at the college will notice an increase in the number of horses grazing in the front paddock.

There is no truth to the rumour that Br Will is working undercover for Fonterra.

Tennis Anyone?

Great effort yesterday by the college tennis team to defeat NPBHS 5 games to 1 to go through to the regional play offs.

Pictured is Josh Walden, son of old boy Kevin, who is the team captain and a tennis player with a future.

Andy S

We warned you last week that Andy Sorenson was back in NP for a short time. We have been able to obtain a somewhat blurry photo to confirm the initial sighting. The pipe is proof of identity.

After leaving the staff at FDMC Andy has been working in the Pacific Islands, mostly for VSA.

He is currently an administrator and adviser on education for the Solomon Islands - he tells us he is not currently coaching a rugby team!

The Lost Photo

A couple of months ago we posted a number of photos of year groups from the 40th Jubilee. We have had several requests for this one which some how got over looked. So here they are, and a hand full they must have been as fourth formers.

The Mustardos

We have relied heavily on the Daily News for postings this week. Todays back page sports photo is of the hard core Taranaki cricket supporters, The Mustardos. We, of course, have been linked to their blog for some time, given that almost all of them are old boys from the last few years.

Never let it be said that our old boys don't enjoy a day out!

Recent old boy Shane Whitehead is doing well in his wrestling career. Today's Daily News has a good article on Shane's latest triumphs over his Aussie opponents.

Our Brother College

Great article in yesterday's NZ Herald about the way things are being done at De La Salle in Mangere. Principal, Br Steve Hogan, is a past Head Boy (1979) at FDMC and has some good things to say about the Lasallian way.

The Big OE

Pictured above are 2007 Head Boy Nick Siffleet, Chas Carrol, Principal Br Peter Ryan and Youth Minister Andrew Ulugia. Nick and Chas were departing for the outback of Australia where they are "sharing the mission" with the Brothers at Balgo Hills. The recent dry spell in Taranaki is unlikely to have prepared them for what they are about to experience.

Magazine Time

The 2007 Magazine is out, with an excellent record of what went on in the course of last year. We have changed the publication date so that the academic and awards records are current with the year of the magazine ie. 2007 Junior Awards in the 2007 Magazine.

While magazines are great because most people can find a picture of themselves, they also perform a vital function in recording a lot of information that can other wise be lost. As we approach our 50th year we find ourselves leaning more and more on the old magazines to confirm who was doing what and when.

We hope to digitize most of the group photos in our past magazines over the next twelve months so that they are available to those who want them in the future.

Watch Out For Andy

If you are in town over the next couple of weeks keep an eye out for Andy Sorenson who is back for a visit from the Solomon Islands where he now lives.

Andy taught at FDMC during the 1990's and was also a hostel supervisor for a time. We have no current photo as Andy likes to keep a low profile but those who know him will recognise "the pipe".

Keep 'em Coming

A recent email from old boy Alexander Wong ...

"Just a quick hello from me been a long time since I was at Francis Douglas (1982-1983). Since then I have gained two degrees in NZ and headed back to the UK in 1994, got married in 2003 ended up working in IT for three of the College's in University of Oxford - the current one I am the IT Manager for St Hugh's College looking after a 12-14 acre site with about 700-800 staff, students academics. So far it's been a good challenge but at some point I will head back to NZ."

Always great to hear what people have been up to so don't be afraid to sing out.

Staffing Changes '08

As we start a new year there are always a few new faces and a couple missing.

  • Mr Chris Rata has returned to the mines of West Australia but hopes to be back again in the future.
  • Mrs Bronwyn Donaldson is having a well earned year off.
  • Mr Tim Weston is currently playing for CD and is off overseas to follow the cricketing dream at the end of the season.
  • Ms Christina Sugiyama has joined the science department. Christina's partner is old boy David Hermanns.
  • Mr Nicky Taylor has come to us from Spotswood College. He is also teaching science with some chemistry and biology.

The Holiday Is Over!

Today sees all students and staff back at school. From now on all swimming, sunbathing and chasing girls will take place outside of school hours.

Pictured are this year's Head Boy Caleb Mawson and Deputy Head Boy David Hills. The guys are on the beach in Sydney where they were attending the LaSallian Leaders Workshop.

For them, as for all of us, the holiday is over and its time to get down to some serious study.

Son of ...

The FDMC soccer blog reports ...

"Stephen KIBBY has been included in the NZ U17 World Cup Development Squad that will compete in the U19 National Youth League during the 2008 season and will attend a series of NZ training camps as they finalise their preparations for the 2009 U17 FIFA World Cup to be held on the African continent. "

And for those of you who were at school between 1983 and now, yes Stephen is the son of the legendary Wayne Kibby, teacher and wrestling coach.

Check out the soccer blog for more details.

We Don't Like To Brag But...

We mentioned a week or so ago that the latest exam results were out. We are pleased to report that our students have done very well. There is not a single measure in which we do not exceed the national mean. Some examples being ..
  • % of students achieving NCEA Level 1 - FDMC 82% NZ 62%
  • % of students achieving NCEA Level 2 - FDMC 89% NZ 64%
  • % of students achieving NCEA Level 3 - FDMC 81% NZ 52%
  • % of students achieving NCEA L1 Literacy - FDMC 86% NZ 76%
  • % of students achieving NCEA L1 Numeracy - FDMC 98% NZ 84%
  • % of students achieving University Entrance - FDMC 79% NZ 50%
We are sure for some of you the whole system is a bit confusing so you will have to take our word that they did pretty well, which isn't to say we aren't looking for this years students to do even better. Scholarship results do not come out until later in Feb. so we still have a couple of fingers crossed for those guys.
